Asbury United Methodist Church
Church History
The United Methodist Church U.S.A.
The United Methodist Church was created on April 23, 1968, when The Evangelical United Brethren Church and The Methodist Church united to form a new denomination
But Methodism in the U.S. dates back to 1736 when John and Charles Wesley came to the New World to spread the movement they began as students in England. United Methodists share a historic connection to other Methodist and Wesleyan bodies.
The History of Asbury
Asbury United Methodist Church began as a mission church by First UMC of Vero Beach. Our current property was purchased in early 1956. Asbury's first service was held on August 3,1958 with 103 attending. Asbury continued to hold worship services in the Rosewood Elementary School cafeteria
until the fellowship hall was completed.
Asbury was formally chartered on October 26,1958 with 74
charter members. District Superintendent Dr. H. W. Blackburn presided over the service, and 170 were in attendance.
There was a ground breaking for the new chapel/fellowship hall on October 11,1959, and the first service was held at Asbury's current location on March 27,1960. The cost for the initial construction was $32,500. In 1962 construction began for an education wing. Men of the church provided the labor,
and the project was not to exceed $13,000 in cost.
On November 3,1970 the opening of the new wing was celebrated. All of the initial debt on the church was cleared by May 3,1970. The initial parsonage was rented with the help of First UMC, and a parsonage was built on the church's current grounds, and it was dedicated in the early spring of 1974.
Fire destroyed a major portion of the sanctuary/fellowship hall and office space in 1974, but the church worked together to rebuild and repair the damage. Groundbreaking for a new sanctuary was held on June 21,1987.
The consecration service for the new sanctuary was held on April 10,1988.
The stained glass in our sanctuary was a gift from a closing church in New York, in the spring of 1999 construction of a choir room, nursery and preschool wing commenced. The new wing was dedicated on
June 13,1999.
Asbury UMC celebrated our 50th anniversary on October 26, 2008.
